How to Wash Bed Sheets

Your bed is the ultimate resting place at the end of a long and tiring day. For a calm sleep, make sure to have clean, fresh and nice smelling sheets. Follow these tips on how to wash bed sheets for a good night’s sleep.

Read the Labels
Most bed sheets can be washed in a regular washing machine. However, some have special fabrics that must be washed in a specific way. Read the labels to make sure you don’t ruin your sheets.

Use the Right Temperature and Settings
Unless they’re extremely dirty, sheets don’t require a heavy wash cycle. For this reason, sheets get clean on the normal, regular or colors cycle. Additionally, polyester blends wash best in warm water while cotton can be washed in hot. Above all, hotter water kills more germs and dust mites that live in bedding.

All About Drying
Although bedding takes longer to dry than a regular load of clothes, leaving them in the dryer for too long causes them to shrink. Tumble dry sheets on a low setting for a short amount of time. This minimizes the risk of shrinking and reduces wrinkles. Additionally, avoid drying bed sheets with towels to prevent over-drying. Sheets dry faster than towels so when the sheets are done, the towels will still be wet.

Additional Tips
Here are some additional tips for how to wash bed sheets:

  • Try to have three sets of sheets for your bed. That way you always have fresh sheets when another set is washing.
  • Don’t overload the washer. Stuffing multiple sets of sheets in one wash cycle causes them to rip or tear and prevents a good clean.
  • Store fresh sheets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

When you think about it, you spend a lot of time in your bed sheets. Every night germs, sweat and other substances from the day build up in your sheets. Wash bed sheets often and in the right way to get the most use out of them. Don’t have the time?
